315 Area Code – Syracuse, New York: Location, Time Zone & History

Central New York's telephone landscape has evolved more slowly than many faster-growing regions: 315 was one of the original area codes assigned in 1947, initially spanning a wide swath of central and northern New York stretching from the Canadian border to the Pennsylvania line.

Its only geographic split came in 1954, when the southern portion, including Binghamton, combined with part of area code 716 to form 607. The region then went more than six decades without another division; rather than splitting the territory again, regulators introduced the 680 overlay on March 11, 2017, requiring ten-digit local dialing across the shared numbering plan area instead of reassigning exchanges to a new code.

Beyond Syracuse—nicknamed the "Salt City" for the salt-spring industry that once made it the country's largest salt producer—the area extends to Utica, Watertown, Rome, and Oswego, and its economy today rests on semiconductor manufacturing, higher education, healthcare, and insurance and financial services, alongside defense and military activity connected to Fort Drum near Watertown.
