Binghamton and New York's Southern Tier are anchored economically by institutions that have shaped area code 607 since its creation in 1954, when the code was formed by combining the southern part of 315 with an eastern slice of 716. Ithaca's Cornell University, founded in 1865, still routes its core campus exchanges through 607, while Corning is home to Corning Incorporated and the Corning Museum of Glass, founded in 1951 and holding one of the world's largest glass collections.

Beyond higher education and materials manufacturing, the region's economy leans on healthcare, dairy farming and agriculture, and tourism drawn to the Finger Lakes wine country.
