History & Cultural Notes

The mid- and lower Hudson Valley, stretching from Poughkeepsie down through Orange, Rockland, and Ulster counties, is reached at area code 845. It was carved out of area code 914 on June 5, 2000, when 914 was reduced to Westchester County alone and 845 absorbed the surrounding valley communities, along with pieces of Columbia, Delaware, Dutchess, Greene, and Sullivan counties.

As the region filled up, mandatory ten-digit local dialing arrived on October 24, 2021, ahead of a planned overlay. Area code 329 was authorized the following May and entered service on March 24, 2023, giving 845 its overlay partner and completing the numbering relief. The valley's borders with Connecticut, New York City's northern suburbs, and the Catskills are reflected in the mix of neighboring codes -- 914, 203, 860, 518, 607, 570, 201, and 973 -- that ring the 845/329 territory.

Beyond IBM's long presence in Poughkeepsie and the region's healthcare, agriculture, and Catskills tourism economy, 845 holds a distinct place in American cultural memory: the original 1969 Woodstock festival took place at Max Yasgur's farm in Bethel, part of the numbering plan area to this day.
