914 Area Code – White Plains, New York: Location, Time Zone & History

Westchester County's 914 is a charter member of the North American Numbering Plan, one of the 86 original area codes AT&T rolled out in October 1947. Its first assignment was sweeping: the entire Hudson Valley and Long Island outside New York City, spanning Delaware, Dutchess, Nassau, Orange, Putnam, Rockland, Suffolk, Sullivan, Ulster, and Westchester counties.

That footprint didn't last. In 1951, Nassau and Suffolk counties broke away as area code 516, trimming 914 to the mainland Hudson Valley. A far larger cut came in 2000, when area code 845 split off the mid- and lower Hudson Valley -- Rockland, Putnam, Dutchess, Orange, Ulster, and Sullivan counties, plus slivers of Columbia, Delaware, and Greene -- leaving 914 confined to Westchester County alone, where it remains today with no overlay added.

What's left is still formidable: Westchester is one of the wealthiest counties in the country and a corporate-headquarters extension of the New York City economy, home to IBM, Mastercard, PepsiCo, and Regeneron Pharmaceuticals. The 914 territory also carries deep cultural weight -- it includes Sleepy Hollow and Tarrytown, the Hudson River villages that inspired Washington Irving's "The Legend of Sleepy Hollow."
