"3-2-1, liftoff!" — the countdown chanted before rocket launches at nearby Cape Canaveral and Kennedy Space Center gave Florida's Space Coast its telephone area code in 1999. Brevard County, home to Melbourne, Palm Bay, Cocoa, Cocoa Beach, Titusville, and Merritt Island, split off from area code 407 that November, and the arrangement is widely cited as the only instance in the North American Numbering Plan where a code's digits were deliberately chosen to spell out a phrase. American Space Museum volunteer Robert Osband petitioned regulators for the sequence, tying the region's phone identity directly to its aerospace heritage.

Since March 2002, new numbers have been issued only within five Brevard County rate centers, making 321 the sole area code for the county even though it also survives as a shared legacy overlay in parts of metro Orlando. That geographic tightening reinforced the code as a distinctly Space Coast identifier rather than a generic Orlando-area number.
