History & Cultural Notes

Florida's Treasure Coast has changed area codes three times in under sixty years, and 772 is the most recent chapter. The counties of Indian River, St. Lucie, and Martin were carved from area code 305 into 407 in 1988, then moved again in 1996 into the newly created 561 along with Palm Beach County. Just five years later, growth pushed 561 toward exhaustion, and on February 11, 2002, the Treasure Coast counties split off once more to form 772, leaving 561 to cover Palm Beach County alone.

Port St. Lucie, the region's largest city, hosts the New York Mets' spring training home at Clover Park, while Stuart in Martin County markets itself as the "Sailfish Capital of the World" for its offshore sport-fishing charters. Indian River County lent its name to a premium grapefruit and orange brand, though citrus greening disease has since cut sharply into local production.

The 772 numbering plan area, encompassing Indian River, St. Lucie, and Martin counties, was home to about 647,445 people as of the 2020 Census. Its economy today rests on retirement and residential real estate, agriculture, sport fishing and boating, sports tourism, and healthcare, spanning cities from Fort Pierce and Vero Beach to Stuart and Sebastian.
