History & Cultural Notes
Palm Beach County has carried its own area code since May 13, 1996, when 561 split off from area code 407 to relieve numbering exhaustion, initially covering Palm Beach, Martin, Indian River, and St. Lucie counties along the Treasure Coast. That larger territory did not last: in 2002 the northern Treasure Coast counties split away into area code 772, leaving 561 to cover Palm Beach County alone.
The county is perhaps best known as home to the town of Palm Beach, a longtime enclave of wealth and winter residence that includes Mar-a-Lago and other historic estates. At the same time, Palm Beach County has earned the nickname the "Winter Vegetable Capital" of the United States for its truck-crop agriculture south and west of Lake Okeechobee, a reminder that the region's identity spans both old-money resort culture and working agricultural land.
Cities served across the numbering plan area include West Palm Beach, Boca Raton, Boynton Beach, Delray Beach, Jupiter, and Wellington. The county's economy reflects this same range, with real estate development, agriculture such as sugar cane and winter vegetables, aerospace manufacturers like Pratt & Whitney and Sikorsky, tourism, and corporate headquarters including NextEra Energy and Office Depot. Growth eventually required more numbers: mandatory 10-digit dialing took effect by October 24, 2021, and the 728 overlay was activated March 10, 2023 to add capacity across the same territory.
