954 Area Code – Fort Lauderdale, Florida: Location, Time Zone & History

Broward County split away from Florida's original statewide 305 numbering plan on September 11, 1995, creating area code 954 and giving Fort Lauderdale and its surrounding cities a number of their own for the first time since 1947. Growth didn't slow: the Florida Public Service Commission approved an overlay in 2000, NANPA confirmed it that December, and area code 754 went into service on August 1, 2001, becoming an all-services overlay across the same 954 territory. Mandatory ten-digit dialing followed when 754 numbers began actual use on April 1, 2002.

Fort Lauderdale has built its identity on the water. Long marketed as the "Yachting Capital of the World," it hosts the Fort Lauderdale International Boat Show, billed as the largest in-water boat show anywhere, and its shipyards, marinas, and superyacht services form a substantial slice of the local economy. Port Everglades adds to that maritime weight as one of the world's busiest cruise ports and a major petroleum and cargo hub for South Florida, ranking among the area's largest employers after tourism.

Beyond Fort Lauderdale itself, the 954/754 territory covers Hollywood, Pompano Beach, Coral Springs, Sunrise, Plantation, Davie, Pembroke Pines, Weston, and Deerfield Beach, together with aerospace and marine manufacturing rounding out the industrial base.
