407 Area Code – Orlando, Florida: Location, Time Zone & History

Orlando and the surrounding Central Florida region are home to Walt Disney World and Universal Orlando Resort, making the area one of the world's most-visited tourist destinations under area code 407. The code went into service on April 16, 1988, splitting off from area code 305 (Florida's original 1947 area code) to relieve numbering exhaustion. It initially stretched well beyond Central Florida, covering the Palm Beaches and Treasure Coast as well, before those areas were reassigned to area code 561 in 1996.

Further growth brought overlay codes rather than additional geographic splits. Area code 321 was layered onto 407 in 2000 across Orange, Osceola, and Seminole counties, while simultaneously becoming the sole area code for Brevard County's Space Coast; new central office codes in 321 have since gone only to Brevard County rate centers. A second overlay, area code 689, entered service on June 4, 2019, adding further capacity across the 407/321 numbering plan area.

The region served extends to Kissimmee, Sanford, Winter Park, and Altamonte Springs, with an economy built around tourism and theme parks, hospitality and conventions, aerospace and defense simulation and training, healthcare, and technology. The Orlando area is nicknamed "Team Orlando" for its role as a national hub of military modeling, simulation, and training organizations.
