History & Cultural Notes

Oakland and the rest of California's East Bay have carried the 510 area code since 1991, when it split off from 415. As the region grew, 510 approached exhaustion, and the California Public Utilities Commission approved an all-services overlay, 341, which entered service on July 22, 2019. Because 341 is an overlay rather than a geographic split, existing 510 numbers did not change, but ten-digit dialing became mandatory across the combined 510/341 complex.

The numbering history of the East Bay includes an earlier split as well: in 1998, area code 925 broke away from 510 to cover the inland East Bay, leaving 510 (and later 341) focused on the western Alameda and Contra Costa county corridor anchored by Oakland. That corridor includes Berkeley, Richmond, Fremont, Hayward, and Alameda alongside Oakland, the largest city in Alameda County and the region's primary urban center.

The 510/341 area is shaped by a mix of port activity, research, and innovation. Berkeley is home to the University of California, Berkeley, and the wider East Bay economy spans several key sectors:

  • Port and maritime logistics
  • Technology
  • Biotechnology and life sciences
  • Higher education and research
  • Healthcare
