History & Cultural Notes

Wine country runs on area code 707, which covers Napa Valley and Sonoma County, two of the most famous wine-producing regions in the United States. The code was carved out of area code 415 in a 1959 flash-cut split that took Solano County and everything north of it -- California's eighth area code, and the last new one assigned in the state until 619 arrived in 1982.

707's numbering history includes a relief plan that never happened: in 2000 the California Public Utilities Commission cancelled a planned three-way split that would have introduced codes 627 and 369, after thousand-block number pooling eased exhaustion enough to make new area codes unnecessary. Relief eventually came anyway, just in a different form -- mandatory ten-digit dialing phased in by October 24, 2021, and the CPUC approved 369 as an all-services overlay in June 2022, which entered service February 1, 2023, reusing the very code once slated for a split.

Beyond wine, the 707/369 region includes the Emerald Triangle counties of Humboldt, Mendocino, and Trinity, historically the country's largest cannabis-producing area, plus Redwood National and State Parks and Travis Air Force Base, a major U.S. Air Force air-mobility hub in Fairfield.
