916 Area Code – Sacramento, California: Location, Time Zone & History

Area code 916 was one of California's first three area codes, assigned in October 1947 to cover the northern part of the state. A 1950 realignment redrew its boundaries to the northeastern corner, and two later splits narrowed it further: area code 209 took the southern reaches (including Fresno, Stockton, and Modesto) in 1958, and area code 530 took the northern Sacramento Valley, the Shasta Cascade region, and the northern Sierra Nevada in 1997. Ironically, that 1997 split left 916 as the only one of California's three original area codes with no territory remaining from its original 1947 footprint.

Rather than split again, regulators added an overlay: the California Public Utilities Commission approved area code 279 in a February 2017 decision, and it entered service March 10, 2018, layering over 916 without disturbing existing numbers.

Today 916/279 covers Sacramento and its neighbors -- Elk Grove, Roseville, Folsom, Citrus Heights, and Rocklin. As California's capital, Sacramento's economy runs on state government alongside healthcare, higher education, and agriculture; the city's mayor declared it "America's Farm-to-Fork Capital" in 2012, a nod to the dense farmland surrounding the numbering plan area.
