History & Cultural Notes

The economy of the 530 region is shaped by its geography as much as its numbering history. Created on November 1, 1997 in a split from area code 916 — with the Dixon exchange reassigned to area code 707 at the same time — the code covers the northern Sacramento Valley, the Shasta Cascade region, and the northern Sierra Nevada, a landscape very different from the urbanized Sacramento core it split from. Agriculture, including rice, almonds, walnuts, and orchard fruit, remains a mainstay alongside timber and forest products. Tourism and outdoor recreation are major drivers as well, anchored by Lake Tahoe's south shore, Mount Shasta, and Lassen Volcanic National Park. Higher education adds another layer to the local economy, with California State University, Chico and UC Davis anchoring the region's two largest population centers and giving it a notable university-town character alongside its farming and forestry base. Healthcare and government services round out the mix.

Numbering capacity, not economic change, drove the more recent history. Ten-digit local dialing became mandatory by October 24, 2021, and the California Public Utilities Commission approved an overlay, area code 837, on June 8, 2023. That overlay went into service January 31, 2025, becoming California's 40th area code and adding capacity without altering the boundaries of the 530 territory. Beyond Redding and Chico, the region also serves Davis, South Lake Tahoe, Yuba City, Woodland, Placerville, Auburn, Grass Valley, Truckee, Red Bluff, Oroville, Paradise, Susanville, and Marysville.
