At roughly 46,000 square miles, area code 760 covers more territory than any other numbering plan area in California -- about 29% of the state's land. It was carved out of area code 619 on March 22, 1997, absorbing the desert and northern-coastal expanse 619 had held since 1982: Imperial, Inyo, and Mono counties in full, plus swaths of San Diego, Riverside, San Bernardino, Los Angeles, and Kern counties.

Number exhaustion resurfaced within a decade. The California Public Utilities Commission initially ordered a geographic split in 2008, but reversed course after businesses objected to a second renumbering in ten years; instead, area code 442 launched as an all-services overlay on November 21, 2009, with mandatory ten-digit dialing following across the whole 760/442 footprint.
