Area code 559 was created on November 14, 1998, when it split off from the southern portion of area code 209 to cover Fresno and the central San Joaquin Valley, including the Visalia-Porterville area; a permissive dialing period allowed both codes to work side by side in the region until May 15, 1999.
The territory served by 559 sits at the heart of California's agricultural economy. Fresno County is consistently ranked among the top agricultural-producing counties in the United States, with almonds and grapes as its leading commodities, and much of its roughly 142,000 acres of vineyards are planted to raisin varieties — an industry traced back to an accidental sun-drying of grapes by Francis Eisen in 1875.
