928 Area Code – Flagstaff, Arizona: Location, Time Zone & History

Arizona's sprawling 928 area code took effect June 23, 2001, when the Arizona Corporation Commission split area code 520 -- itself created from 602 back in 1995. Cochise, Pima, Pinal, and Santa Cruz counties, covering the Tucson metro area, kept 520, while everything else in the former territory, the northern, eastern, and western reaches of the state, became 928. Permissive dialing began that July, with the change made mandatory by January 5, 2002.

928 is Arizona's only standalone, non-overlay area code among the state's four, and it covers by far the largest land area of any Arizona numbering plan, stretching from Flagstaff and Sedona to Yuma, Kingman, Lake Havasu City, Prescott, and the Arizona portion of the Navajo Nation. Ten-digit local dialing became mandatory across the territory on October 24, 2021, ahead of the nationwide 988 crisis line launch.

The region's economy runs on tourism drawn to the Grand Canyon, Sedona's red rocks, and Route 66 heritage sites, alongside Yuma County's winter lettuce and vegetable production, among the largest in the country. Flagstaff's Lowell Observatory, where Pluto was discovered in 1930, and Northern Arizona University round out the territory's identity as a center of both science and tribal governance for the Navajo Nation and Hopi Tribe.
