Area code 602 has served the Phoenix area since 1947, when it was assigned as one of the original 86 North American area codes and originally covered the entire state of Arizona. As telephone use grew, the numbering plan was gradually narrowed: in 1995, rural and southern Arizona outside metro Phoenix split off to form area code 520, leaving 602 focused on the Phoenix metropolitan area.
A further three-way split took effect in 1999, when 602 was retained for central Phoenix while new codes 480 and 623 were created to cover the East Valley and West Valley respectively. The most recent milestone came in 2023, when the boundaries between the three codes were eliminated and merged into a single overlay complex for the Phoenix metro, bringing mandatory 10-digit dialing to the region. Together, these codes now function as one of the largest single local calling areas in the country, and the original code is still widely used as local shorthand for the city itself.
