History & Cultural Notes

Omaha's insurance, financial services, and logistics firms all dial out on a code with roots stretching back to the very beginning of the North American numbering plan. 402 was one of the original 86 area codes assigned in 1947, when it covered the entirety of Nebraska. That changed in 1954, when the state was split in two: area code 308 took over western Nebraska, while 402 was retained for the eastern half, including both Omaha and the state capital, Lincoln.

Growth in eastern Nebraska eventually caught up with the numbering pool again. In 2011, area code 531 was introduced as an all-services overlay across the same territory already served by 402, rather than another geographic split.

The 402/531 area today also reaches Bellevue, Fremont, and Norfolk, and it is inseparable from Omaha's most famous corporate resident: Berkshire Hathaway, whose headquarters and annual shareholders meeting draw attention to the region each year. Local industry runs from insurance and financial services to transportation and logistics, agriculture and agribusiness, telecommunications, and healthcare.
