Topeka, the capital of Kansas, carries area code 785, a code that did not exist until NANPA announced on February 12, 1997 that the state's original 913 territory needed splitting. Since 1947, 913 had covered the entire northern half of Kansas -- Kansas City, Topeka, Lawrence, Manhattan and Salina alike -- but effective July 20, 1997 everything from Lawrence westward to the Colorado line broke off as 785, while 913 shrank down to the Kansas City metro area alone.
Unlike many of its neighbors, 785 has never needed an overlay; it remains the largest of Kansas's four area codes by geography, stretching unbroken from the Colorado border to the Missouri line. Its economy leans on state government in Topeka, manufacturing plants for Goodyear, Hill's Pet Nutrition and Frito-Lay, and a cluster of universities: Kansas State in Manhattan, the University of Kansas in Lawrence, and Washburn in Topeka, alongside the Army post at Fort Riley.
The territory carries real historical weight. Topeka was the named defendant city in Brown v. Board of Education, decided by the Supreme Court in 1954, while Lawrence's Bleeding Kansas era included the 1863 Lawrence Massacre led by William Quantrill. Manhattan, nicknamed the "Little Apple," rounds out a region defined as much by its universities as by its wheat fields.
