Kansas City's home code, 816, was assigned in October 1947 as one of the original 86 area codes, originally spanning the western part of Missouri. It has been reduced twice since: 417 split away in 1950 to serve Springfield and Joplin in the southwest, and 660 split off in 1997 after a jeopardy declaration, taking the rural eastern and northwestern counties and leaving 816 to the Kansas City metro and St. Joseph.
An overlay was proposed as early as 2001 but repeatedly postponed; area code 975 finally entered service October 13, 2023 under NANPA Planning Letter PL-568, bringing mandatory ten-digit dialing to a region the 2020 Census counted at about 1.49 million people across 15 counties.
Few metros wear their culture as visibly. The 18th & Vine Historic District birthed Kansas City jazz and now houses the American Jazz Museum and the Negro Leagues Baseball Museum, while the city claims more barbecue restaurants per capita than anywhere else in the country. St. Joseph, at the region's edge, launched the Pony Express in 1860. Corporate Kansas City runs on Hallmark Cards, H&R Block, Cerner/Oracle Health, and a cluster of animal-health firms known as the Animal Health Corridor.
