913 Area Code – Kansas City, Kansas: Location, Time Zone & History

Area code 913 was one of the original 86 numbering plan areas AT&T assigned in October 1947, and in its earliest form it covered the entire northern half of Kansas, from the Colorado line to the Missouri line, taking in Kansas City, Topeka, Lawrence, Manhattan, and Salina. NANPA announced a split on February 12, 1997, and effective July 20, 1997 the western portion of that territory, from Lawrence on, became area code 785, while 913 was retained for the Kansas City metro area on the Kansas side. Permissive dialing across the old northern-Kansas footprint continued until October 3, 1998.

Today 913 covers Wyandotte, Johnson, Leavenworth, Miami, Atchison, and Linn counties -- a population of roughly 921,000 by the 2020 Census -- and has never needed an overlay of its own.

The territory's economy is anchored by corporate headquarters as much as by geography: Sprint (now T-Mobile) built its combined operations at the former Sprint World Headquarters in Overland Park, Garmin is headquartered in Olathe, and Black & Veatch is based in Overland Park as well, alongside the academic medical center of the University of Kansas Health System. Leavenworth, Kansas's oldest incorporated city, is home to Fort Leavenworth, the Army's oldest active fort west of the Mississippi, while Kansas City, Kansas hosts Sporting Kansas City's Children's Mercy Park in the Village West district.
