970 came into being on April 2, 1995, when Colorado's original statewide area code, 303, was geographically split, handing the northern and western two-thirds of the state -- Fort Collins, Greeley, Grand Junction, Durango, and the mountain resort corridor -- their own numbering plan while Denver retained 303. Three decades of growth eventually caught up with the territory: the Colorado Public Utilities Commission approved an overlay, 748, in 2023 to head off projected number exhaustion by 2026, and it went into service on July 7, 2025. Ten-digit dialing had already become mandatory across 970 in October 2021.
Fort Collins, home to Colorado State University, is widely regarded as the birthplace of the state's craft-brewing industry, hosting New Belgium Brewing, Odell Brewing, and Anheuser-Busch's largest U.S. production plant. Weld County, also within the territory, anchors the Denver-Julesburg Basin and ranks among the nation's leading agricultural and oil-and-gas-producing counties.
