Central Oklahoma has carried the 405 area code since 1947, when it was one of the original 86 area codes created across North America. At the time it covered the entire state of Oklahoma, anchored by the state capital, Oklahoma City. The territory narrowed twice: northeastern Oklahoma split off to form area code 918 in 1953, and southern and western Oklahoma followed in 1997 to create area code 580, leaving 405 to serve the central part of the state. In 2021, growing demand led to an overlay code, 572, with ten-digit dialing becoming mandatory and new numbers assigned from 572 starting that May.
