Tulsa's area code 918 dates to 1953, when it was split out of area code 405 to give northeastern Oklahoma its own numbering plan area separate from the rest of the state. The code stood alone for nearly six decades before number exhaustion caught up with it: on April 1, 2011, area code 539 was added as an all-services overlay across the same territory, becoming Oklahoma's very first area-code overlay.

The 918/539 region reaches well beyond Tulsa itself, serving Broken Arrow, Bartlesville, Muskogee, Sapulpa, Claremore, Jenks, Owasso, Okmulgee, and Tahlequah. Its economy still carries the imprint of the early-20th-century oil boom that built the region, alongside aviation, finance, and manufacturing.
