It remains the largest area code footprint in the state, and Jonesboro serves as its primary city.
Relief for 870 had a long, stop-and-start history. The Arkansas Public Service Commission approved an all-service overlay, 327, back in December 2009, only to suspend the relief action indefinitely in June 2012 after number pooling eased the exhaustion pressure. A 2021 NANPA exhaust study revived the plan, and mandatory ten-digit dialing began January 19, 2024, with the 327 overlay finally entering service on February 20, 2024.
