History & Cultural Notes

The 1901 Spindletop gusher near Beaumont marked the start of the modern Texas oil boom, giving rise to companies later known as Texaco and Gulf Oil, and that same petrochemical legacy still defines the Golden Triangle region served today by area code 409. The code was created on March 19, 1983, when it split from area code 713, originally forming a horseshoe-shaped territory that wrapped around Houston to the north, east, and west.

That broad footprint was reorganized in 2000, when the original 409 territory was divided three ways: the eastern segment covering Beaumont and Galveston kept the 409 code, while the central portion around Nacogdoches became area code 936 and the western portion around Bryan-College Station became area code 979. In 2021, ten-digit dialing became mandatory across the remaining 409 area ahead of the nationwide activation of 988 as the National Suicide Prevention Lifeline number, since some local exchanges already began with those digits.

Beyond Beaumont, the region includes Galveston, Port Arthur, Texas City, and League City. Its economy remains rooted in petrochemical refining and manufacturing, oil and gas production, port and shipping logistics, commercial fishing and seafood, and Gulf Coast tourism, with Galveston Island a major draw for its beaches and nineteenth-century historic architecture.
