713 Area Code – Houston, Texas: Location, Time Zone & History

Area code 713 dates back to 1947, when it was one of Texas's original four area codes, originally stretching from the Sabine River to the Brazos Valley. As Houston grew, the territory was reshaped several times: a 1983 split carved off northern, eastern, and western portions into area code 409, and a 1996 split created area code 281 for most of the suburbs outside a boundary roughly following Beltway 8. In 1999 the geographic boundary between the two was erased in favor of an overlay, with area code 832 added across the whole region and ten-digit dialing made mandatory. Area code 346 followed in 2014, and 621 was activated as a fifth overlay code in 2025 amid continued number exhaustion.

Today the numbering plan area serves Houston along with Bellaire, Pasadena, and Baytown, sitting in the Central Time zone. Combined, the counties covered by this overlay region were home to roughly 6.6 million people as of the 2020 Census. The local economy reflects Houston's role as a major energy and logistics hub, spanning:
