History & Cultural Notes

Philadelphia's numbering history runs through three area codes layered on top of one another rather than replaced. The city and its northern suburbs kept 215 after a 1994 split sent the western suburbs, most of Berks County, and the Lehigh Valley to area code 610. A first overlay, 267, arrived on July 1, 1997. 445, first proposed in 2000, rescinded in 2003, then revived and approved by the Pennsylvania PUC on November 9, 2016, became the second overlay, activated February 3, 2018, with new numbers assignable from March 3, 2018.

Because 445 sits atop the historic 215 and 267 codes rather than replacing either, callers throughout the complex dial 10 digits regardless of which code they're reaching. The combined area serves Philadelphia, Levittown, King of Prussia, and Lansdale, an Eastern Time region with a population approaching 3.7 million.

Economic activity concentrates in healthcare and biotech, higher education, finance and insurance, and tourism and hospitality.
