Florida's Panhandle carries two overlapping area codes today, and 448 is the newer of the pair. It was approved by the Florida Public Service Commission on November 5, 2019 and entered service on June 22, 2021 as an all-services overlay on area code 850, added after 850 ran out of central office codes. That original code, 850, dates back to 1997, when it split off from 904 to cover the Panhandle; permissive dialing began that June, with mandatory dialing following in March 1998. Ten-digit dialing across both codes became mandatory shortly before 448 launched, on May 22, 2021.
The combined 850/448 numbering plan area is anchored by Tallahassee, Florida's capital and home to Florida State University and Florida A&M University, but it also reaches Pensacola, Panama City, Fort Walton Beach, Crestview, and Destin. Its economy leans on:
