Indianapolis has carried a telephone area code since the earliest days of the North American Numbering Plan, when 317 was assigned in 1947 to cover the northern two-thirds of Indiana. That territory narrowed considerably in 1997, when most of central Indiana outside metro Indianapolis was carved off into area code 765. Nearly two decades later, growth in the Indianapolis numbering plan area called for more capacity, and area code 463 was layered on as an overlay, entering permissive service on March 15, 2016 with mandatory 10-digit dialing phased in by October 15, 2016. The choice of 463 was deliberate: on a telephone keypad, the digits spell "IND," a nod to Indianapolis itself.
The 317/463 territory is centered on Marion County, whose 2020 Census population stood at 977,203, and extends to Carmel, Fishers, Greenwood, and Noblesville. Its economy spans pharmaceuticals and life sciences, motorsports, logistics and distribution, insurance, and manufacturing.
Indianapolis's motorsports identity runs deep: the city is home to the Indianapolis Motor Speedway and the Indianapolis 500, first run in 1911, and it also serves as headquarters to the NCAA.
