480 Area Code – Mesa, Arizona: Location, Time Zone & History

The East Valley of metro Phoenix — Mesa, Tempe, Scottsdale, Chandler, and Gilbert, along with Paradise Valley and part of north Phoenix — gained its own area code on March 1, 1999, when the original Arizona code 602 was divided three ways: 602 stayed with central Phoenix, 623 was created for the West Valley, and the East Valley received code 480. That split followed an earlier one in 1995, when rural and southern Arizona had already broken away from 602 as area code 520.

Two decades later, the numbering plan changed again. On October 24, 2021, 10-digit dialing became mandatory across the region ahead of other Phoenix-area codes, prompted by the new 988 Suicide and Crisis Lifeline conflicting with existing exchanges. Then, on September 12, 2023, the boundaries separating 602, 480, and 623 were eliminated entirely, merging them into a single overlay complex covering the whole Phoenix metro area, one of the largest unified local calling areas in the country.

The East Valley carries its own identity, associated with affluent, fast-growing suburbs distinct from the older Phoenix core, and its economy includes semiconductor manufacturing at Intel's Ocotillo campus in Chandler, Arizona State University in Tempe, Boeing's helicopter plant in Mesa, and Scottsdale's resort and golf tourism. Also serving Fountain Hills and Apache Junction, the region sits in a state that has not observed daylight saving time since 1968.
