History & Cultural Notes

Southern Minnesota's economy has long centered on the pairing of farmland and medicine, and the 507 area code traces that same territory. Put into service on January 1, 1954, it was formed by combining the southwestern portion of area code 218 with the southern portion of 612, giving the newly independent region — Rochester, Mankato, Worthington, Fairmont, Albert Lea, and Northfield among them — its own numbering plan for the first time.

Rochester's role as home to Mayo Clinic, one of the largest integrated medical group practices in the world and Minnesota's largest private employer, has shaped the region's economic profile alongside agriculture and food processing, manufacturing, insurance, and higher education. Mankato anchors a similar blend of agricultural trade and educational institutions further west.

Demand for numbers eventually caught up with the area: NANPA forecast exhaustion of central-office codes in 507 by 2025, prompting the Minnesota Public Utilities Commission to approve a new overlay code, 924, in March 2023. Mandatory ten-digit dialing began in July 2024, and 924 numbers became assignable that August, forming the state's first overlay complex.
