Southern Minnesota's economy has long centered on the pairing of farmland and medicine, and the 507 area code traces that same territory. Put into service on January 1, 1954, it was formed by combining the southwestern portion of area code 218 with the southern portion of 612, giving the newly independent region — Rochester, Mankato, Worthington, Fairmont, Albert Lea, and Northfield among them — its own numbering plan for the first time.
