512 Area Code – Austin, Texas: Location, Time Zone & History

Area code 512 dates back to October 1947, when it was one of the original area codes created for North America. At its start, it covered an enormous stretch of south-central Texas, from the Gulf Coast down to the Mexican border, taking in Austin, San Antonio, Corpus Christi, Brownsville, Harlingen, and McAllen. That footprint didn't last: in 1992 the western and southwestern territory, including San Antonio and the Rio Grande Valley, split off as area code 210. Seven years later, in 1999, the southern remainder around Corpus Christi split away as 361, narrowing the numbering plan area down to roughly the Austin area it serves today.

As Austin's population and phone demand kept climbing, splitting the territory again was no longer the preferred fix. Instead, regulators introduced 737 as an overlay in 2013, layering a second code over the same region rather than dividing it geographically. That shift came with mandatory ten-digit dialing, phased in from late 2012 and required by mid-2013.

Despite the overlay, 512 remains the number Austin residents associate with the city's identity, predating the tech-driven growth and "Keep Austin Weird" branding that followed. It still serves Round Rock, Cedar Park, Georgetown, San Marcos, and Kyle, an area now built around information technology, semiconductors, higher education, state government, and the local music and entertainment scene.
