830 Area Code – New Braunfels, Texas: Location, Time Zone & History

South-central Texas has been split more than once: area code 512 covered most of the region until 1992, when San Antonio and the Rio Grande Valley broke away as area code 210. Just five years later, on July 7, 1997, 210 itself was split three ways -- San Antonio's urban core kept 210, the Rio Grande Valley and border region became 956, and the surrounding ring of suburbs and Hill Country became 830. The result is unusual geography: 830 completely encircles San Antonio, with the city's own 210 (and later its 2017 overlay, 726) sitting as an enclave inside 830's territory.

830 covers New Braunfels, Kerrville, Del Rio, Eagle Pass, Fredericksburg, Seguin, Uvalde, and Boerne, an economy built on Hill Country wine tourism, river recreation on the Comal and Guadalupe, ranching, and cross-border trade through the Del Rio-Piedras Negras and Eagle Pass-Piedras Negras crossings. New Braunfels, founded in 1845 by German immigrants at the meeting of two rivers, still celebrates that heritage each fall at Wurstfest, and the broader 19th-century German settlement of the Hill Country was notably pro-Union at the time of Texas's secession. Mandatory ten-digit local dialing took effect across 830 in 2021 ahead of the nationwide 988 rollout.
