956 Area Code – Laredo, Texas: Location, Time Zone & History

On July 7, 1997, area code 210 split three ways, and the border region around Laredo and the Rio Grande Valley emerged with its own area code, 956. The same reorganization created 830 for the Hill Country and San Antonio's suburban ring, while 210 itself was pared down to San Antonio's urban core. 956 has never required an overlay, and today it borders 361 and 830 within the NANP.

Laredo, nicknamed "The Gate City to Mexico," anchors the territory both economically and culturally. It functions as the largest inland port in the United States, handling roughly 40% of all U.S.-Mexico land trade across four international bridges -- trade that flows alongside cross-border retail and manufacturing tied to maquiladoras just south of the line. The Rio Grande Valley beyond Laredo, including Brownsville, McAllen, and Harlingen, adds agriculture, healthcare, and tourism to the mix, with South Padre Island's beaches and the Gladys Porter Zoo drawing visitors.

Culturally, the 956 territory is a bilingual, binational Tejano region straddling the Rio Grande. Laredo is over 95% Hispanic and hosts the month-long Washington's Birthday Celebration, one of the country's largest festivals of its kind, drawing roughly 400,000 people. The city also lent its name to the 1876 ballad "Streets of Laredo," later popularized by Marty Robbins and Johnny Cash.
