History & Cultural Notes

West Texas needed more telephone numbers by the early 2000s, and rather than a single split, regulators carved out two new codes from area code 915 on the same day, April 5, 2003: 325 to the south and east, and 432 for the Permian Basin around Midland and Odessa. El Paso and the surrounding Trans-Pecos region retained the original 915, while the newly created code took over the oil country to the east.

Midland-Odessa functions as the commercial and administrative hub of the Permian Basin, one of the most productive oil-producing regions in the United States, and the surrounding territory reaches well beyond the twin cities to Big Spring, Fort Stockton, Pecos, and Alpine. That geographic spread ties together a mix of oilfield towns, ranching country, and small regional centers across a large stretch of West Texas.
