History & Cultural Notes

Few area codes have been carved up as many times as 915. Assigned in October 1947 as one of the original 86 area codes, it originally stretched across far West Texas, running from El Paso east through the Permian Basin and the Panhandle all the way to Fort Worth.

  • 1953: the eastern portion, including Lubbock and the South Plains, was folded into a new area code 817 along with western portions of area code 214.
  • 1957: most of the remaining Panhandle territory merged with western 817 to create area code 806.
  • 2003: a three-way split on April 5 left 915 with only El Paso and the Trans-Pecos, while Abilene and San Angelo took new code 325 and the Midland-Odessa area took 432.

What survives today is a compact, unoverlaid numbering plan covering El Paso, Culberson, and Hudspeth counties -- the only part of Texas that sits predominantly in the Mountain Time Zone rather than Central. The region's identity is bound to its binational geography: El Paso and Ciudad Juárez, Mexico, separated only by the Rio Grande, form one of the largest binational metro areas in the world, with Fort Bliss and cross-border maquiladora manufacturing anchoring the local economy.
