806 Area Code – Amarillo, Texas: Location, Time Zone & History

Area code 806 covers the Texas Panhandle and South Plains, put into service in 1957 through a flash-cut from area code 915 that also picked up a small slice of territory formerly in 817. Of the six area codes that divided Texas between 1957 and 1983 -- 214, 512, 713, 817, 915, and 806 -- it stands alone as the one that has never needed a split or an overlay, a run of stability now approaching seven decades.

Amarillo and Lubbock anchor an economy still rooted in the land:

• Panhandle cattle feedlots and beef processing supplying roughly a quarter of the nation's beef
• Cotton grown across the Lubbock/South Plains, one of the largest contiguous cotton belts in the world
