531 Area Code – Omaha, Nebraska: Location, Time Zone & History

Unlike most area codes, 531 was never carved out of a boundary split. NANPA assigned it on July 1, 2009, and it went into service on March 26, 2011 as an all-services overlay layered directly onto the existing 402 numbering plan area in eastern Nebraska, which was running short of available central office codes. Mandatory ten-digit dialing began that same spring to prepare residents for the change. Because an overlay adds capacity without redrawing territory, existing 402 numbers were left completely unchanged when 531 arrived, sparing homes and businesses across eastern Nebraska the disruption of forced renumbering.

The result is that 531 and 402 now describe the same community: greater Omaha and Lincoln, along with Bellevue, Fremont, and Norfolk. Omaha is home to Berkshire Hathaway's headquarters, and Lincoln serves as the state capital, giving the shared territory an outsized profile in insurance and financial services alongside transportation and logistics, agriculture and agribusiness, telecommunications, and healthcare. For residents, a 531 number carries the same regional identity as a 402 one — a marker of eastern Nebraska rather than of any particular era or split, since both codes have coexisted on equal footing since the overlay's introduction rather than one superseding the other.
