History & Cultural Notes

Central Oklahoma's numbering history stretches back further than area code 572 itself. The original area code 405 once covered the entire state, until northeastern Oklahoma split off to form 918 in 1953; a second split in 1997 carved out southern and western Oklahoma as area code 580, leaving 405 to serve only the central portion of the state anchored by Oklahoma City. Announced in January 2020 and put into service May 24, 2021, area code 572 was layered on top of that reduced 405 territory as an all-services overlay rather than a further geographic split, following mandatory ten-digit dialing that began a month earlier.

This made 572 only the state's second overlay, after 539 was added over the Tulsa area's 918 in 2011. Oklahoma City anchors both codes and, together with 405, forms the only Oklahoma numbering plan area that does not touch another state's border. Beyond the capital, the territory reaches Norman, Edmond, Stillwater, Shawnee, and Moore.

The regional economy draws on government, energy, aerospace and aviation, healthcare, and higher education, a mix shaped in part by the state capital's institutions and by Oklahoma City's long-standing role as an aviation and energy hub.
