Its territory was first carved out of area code 313 on December 1, 1993, when the northern portion of that plan, including Macomb County, became area code 810. Less than a decade later, an overlay of 810 was proposed but abandoned after public resistance to mandatory ten-digit dialing, and a split was implemented instead: 586 launched on September 22, 2001, assigned to the eleven rate centers of Macomb County, with permissive dialing of 810 allowed until March 23, 2002.
