History & Cultural Notes
Southwestern Ontario's 519 area code dates to November 1, 1953, when it was formed from the western portion of area code 416 and the southwestern portion of 613 in a rearrangement of the numbering plan. Its territory has been reshaped repeatedly since: parts split off in 1957 to help form area code 705, and starting in 2006 a series of overlays, first 226, then 548 in 2015, then 382 in 2023, was layered over the same region as demand grew, with a fifth code, 487, set aside for future relief in 2025.
The 519 region carries a strong identity built around its cities. Windsor sits across the Detroit River from Detroit, Michigan, linked by the Ambassador Bridge, one of the busiest international crossings in North America, while Kitchener-Waterloo has earned the nickname "Silicon Valley North" for its concentration of technology firms clustered around the University of Waterloo. The area also hosts the largest Oktoberfest celebration outside Germany, and Stratford is known for the Stratford Festival, one of North America's largest classical repertory theatre companies.
