History & Cultural Notes
Nickel mining put Sudbury on the map, and the smokestacks and headframes around the Big Nickel -- a 9-metre replica of a 1951 five-cent piece erected in 1964 -- still mark the heart of area code 705. Created in 1956 from portions of the 613 and 519 numbering plan areas, 705 originally covered most of Ontario north and west of the Golden Horseshoe before shrinking in 1962, when area code 807 was split off to serve the northwest.
Number demand eventually outgrew the huge remaining territory, so an overlay, 249, was approved and put into service on March 19, 2011, with ten-digit local dialing arriving alongside it. A second overlay, 683, followed on June 18, 2022, making 705 one of the few Canadian numbering plan areas to need two overlays layered on a single base code.
