906 Area Code – Marquette, Michigan: Location, Time Zone & History

Michigan's Upper Peninsula has been reachable through area code 906 since March 19, 1961, when it was carved out of area code 616 in a flash cut with no permissive dialing period -- 616 had previously stretched across both western Lower Michigan and the entire Upper Peninsula. Unlike most numbering plan areas its size, 906 has never needed a split or overlay, and NANPA projects no exhaustion until roughly the 22nd century.

Marquette serves as both the primary and largest city, with Escanaba, Sault Ste. Marie, Iron Mountain, and Houghton rounding out the territory. The Upper Peninsula's economy traces back to the historic iron ore mining of the Marquette Iron Range and the copper heritage of the Keweenaw Peninsula, alongside forestry, Lake Superior shipping, and tourism drawn to Pictured Rocks and Isle Royale National Parks; Northern Michigan University and Michigan Technological University anchor its higher education sector.

Residents of the region are informally called "Yoopers," and locals mark September 6 as unofficial "906 Day." The territory reaches across the Straits of Mackinac to the Lower Peninsula's 231 via the Mackinac Bridge, and across the St. Marys River to Ontario's 705 at Sault Ste. Marie -- though Bois Blanc Island, despite sitting in Mackinac County, dials through 231 instead of 906 because its community ties run south.
