616 Area Code – Grand Rapids, Michigan: Location, Time Zone & History

Grand Rapids has carried area code 616 since 1947, when it was one of only three original area codes assigned to Michigan, alongside 313 and 517. At the time, 616 was by far the largest of the three, covering the entire western half of the Lower Peninsula as well as the whole Upper Peninsula.

That vast territory shrank in stages. The Upper Peninsula was carved off in 1961 to form area code 906. In 1999, the northwestern Lower Peninsula, including Muskegon, Traverse City, and Cadillac, was split into area code 231. A third split in 2002 moved the southern portion, including Kalamazoo and Battle Creek, into area code 269, leaving 616 to cover Grand Rapids and its immediate surroundings, among them Wyoming, Holland, and Grand Haven. No overlay has since been introduced, though ten-digit local dialing became mandatory in 2021 to accommodate the new nationwide 988 code.

Grand Rapids earned the nickname "Furniture City" for its dominance of 19th- and early 20th-century furniture manufacturing, a legacy still echoed in area industries such as healthcare, higher education, automotive manufacturing, and craft brewing, the last of which has brought the city recognition as "Beer City, USA." The city also hosts ArtPrize, a large international public art competition and exhibition.
