History & Cultural Notes
Area code 517 is one of Michigan's three original area codes, assigned in 1947 alongside 313 and 616 to cover the eastern half of the Lower Peninsula outside metropolitan Detroit. For more than five decades it was the only one of the three left untouched by a split or overlay, until 2001, when the central and northern portion of its territory, including the Tri-Cities and Saginaw area, was carved off into the new area code 989. What remained is the south-central Lansing and Jackson region the code still covers today.
The territory's economy reflects several strands of the state's growth:
- State government and public administration, since Lansing has served as Michigan's capital since 1847
- Automotive manufacturing, rooted in Lansing's history as the birthplace of the Oldsmobile brand, founded by Ransom E. Olds in 1897
- Higher education, anchored by Michigan State University in East Lansing
- Healthcare, insurance, and information technology
Beyond Lansing, the numbering plan area reaches East Lansing, Jackson, Adrian, Howell, Coldwater, and Hillsdale. Jackson holds a notable place in political history as a commonly cited birthplace of the Republican Party, following the "Under the Oaks" meeting of July 6, 1854, though Ripon, Wisconsin, also shares in that recognition.
