History & Cultural Notes

Area code 645 is the newest addition to Miami's phone numbering plan, activated August 4, 2023 as an all-services overlay layered over the existing 305/786 territory. The Florida Public Service Commission approved the new code on February 25, 2022 to provide relief ahead of eventual exhaustion of the combined 305/786 supply, following a history of expansion that began when 786 was introduced in 1998 and extended to the Florida Keys portion of Monroe County in 2001.

The numbering area anchors one of the country's most significant international commerce hubs. Miami-Dade County's economy is built around several interlocking sectors:

  • International trade and banking
  • Tourism and hospitality
  • Cruise industry, anchored by PortMiami
  • Real estate and construction
  • Logistics and transportation

Beyond Miami itself, the territory reaches Hialeah, Miami Beach, Miami Gardens, Kendall, Homestead, Doral, and Coral Gables. Culturally, the region is a major hub for Latin American and Caribbean life, visible in neighborhoods such as Little Havana and Little Haiti, while Miami Beach's Art Deco Historic District along Ocean Drive holds one of the largest concentrations of Art Deco architecture anywhere.
