Before it had its own area code, the Turks and Caicos Islands shared the Caribbean's 809 numbering plan area, with local calls routed through exchange prefixes 946 and, later, 941. That arrangement changed on June 1, 1997, when area code 649 was carved out of 809 and assigned exclusively to the territory. To ease the transition, regulators allowed a permissive dialing period in which residents could still reach numbers using the old 809 format, before compliance became mandatory on May 31, 1998.
The new code covers a small island chain anchored by the capital, Cockburn Town, and the more populous Providenciales, alongside North Caicos, Middle Caicos, South Caicos, and Grand Turk. A 2022 population estimate put the territory at roughly 47,720 residents. The islands' economy leans heavily on tourism and hospitality, supplemented by offshore banking and financial services, real estate development, construction, and fishing, particularly the export of conch and lobster.
Culturally, the territory is closely identified with conch, a staple of local cuisine and a broader symbol of island life, and with ripsaw music, a homegrown genre built around the handsaw as a percussion instrument.
