680 Area Code – Syracuse, New York: Location, Time Zone & History

Area code 680 arrived in central and northern New York on March 11, 2017, as an all-services overlay on the long-standing 315 numbering plan area. It was the first overlay ever implemented in upstate New York, and its introduction meant every local call in the region shifted to ten-digit dialing rather than the traditional seven digits. The underlying 315 code dates back to 1947, one of the original North American area codes, so 680 layers a modern fix onto a decades-old foundation rather than replacing it.

The 315/680 territory is large, stretching across an eighteen-county region from western Wayne County to Massena and south toward Cortland. Beyond Syracuse, the primary city, the plan area reaches Utica, Watertown, Rome, and Oswego. The regional economy leans on higher education, healthcare, semiconductor manufacturing, defense and military services, and insurance and financial companies, reflecting a mix of institutional and industrial employers.

Because new 680 numbers are only issued to newly activated lines, most phones in the region still carry the older 315 code, and 680 itself is likely to remain the less common of the pair for years. The numbering plan area also includes Fort Drum near Watertown, one of the largest U.S. Army posts in the Northeast.
