689 Area Code – Orlando, Florida: Location, Time Zone & History

Orlando's telephone numbering has long been shaped by the region's status as one of the busiest tourism destinations in the country. The metro area, anchored by Walt Disney World and Universal Orlando Resort, spans Orange, Osceola, and Seminole counties along with small slices of Volusia and Lake counties, and for years relied on area codes 407 and 321 to cover the constant stream of new business and residential lines that tourism, hospitality, and related industries generate.

As those two codes combined approached exhaustion, regulators added 689 as an all-services overlay across the same territory. It went into service on June 4, 2019. Because it is an overlay rather than a split, 689 has no distinct service area of its own -- it is simply dialed alongside 407 and 321 throughout the shared numbering plan area, and ten-digit local dialing is required for every call regardless of which of the three codes is involved.
